The Two Pillars of Eastlake, Hangzhou, China (3D animation)
Water – the source of Hangzhou's identity - is the source of orientation and serves to establish the identity for this new Urban Garden in the “Eastlake” district in Hangzhou, as well as act as the main organizing feature for the buildings surrounding it. The garden;s main elements are the two 300 meter towers proposed by Coop Himmelb(l)au. With their subtly corresponding shape the Two Pillars towers are inspired by the Pagodas and towers of Westlake, but also reflective of the contemporary, dynamic technology displayed by their characteristic superstructure, the paired objects use the concept of Composed Balance found in the perspectives of the Chinese Garden to create a positive tension between different elements.
