Project Brief
Design a large Care Home with the ability to accommodate a variety of needs, both private and in support of local social services. The building needs to allow flexibility and the ability to evolve as the user requirements change over time.
Outcome
The final design took inspiration from the local vernacular, using local building materials and scale to create a building that fits within its context. A challenging sloped site created the opportunity to utilise the hill to ensure the proposed building was not overbearing to the surrounding neighbours.
Far from a traditional Care Home, future residents will benefit from suites large enough to allow a relatively independent lifestyle while having access to care. They are able to prepare food and receive visitors in the privacy of their room depending on individual preferences.
In addition to full time residents, the buildings design has incorporated a Community Space including a community centre, treatment room and a number of suites. The use of these spaces can vary from patients that require rehabilitation currently occupying NHS hospital beds (step down care) as well as residents that are receiving respite care (short term).
Creating a building that is flexible in its planning and able to evolve as the needs change over time has resulted in a prime example of collective living and care for the elderly.
