This is a senior position within the Henrybuilt design group. It involves working directly with clients and architects, across the country, to develop interior spaces that involve Henrybuilt product. We need people who have portfolios and experience that show they are great at understanding, communicating, and creating beautiful results. Talented on multiple levels. And who can represent Henrybuilt at a senior level and grow with the company.
This is not a typical job posting. My name is Julianna Morais and I am the Vice President of Design at Henrybuilt.
I received my MArch I from Georgia Tech and started my career at Morphosis and then at Frank Gehry’s office in Los Angeles. I spent 10 years in these great firms working on exciting projects (Hypobank, LA Now, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Chicago Lakefront Millennium Park, and the IAC Building).
But I did very little actual design. Projects lasted for years, and despite the fact that I was successful and grew to a leadership level in those offices, much of the work was about carrying out the details and execution of design decisions made by others.
In 2007 I joined Henrybuilt. Surprisingly at that point I had almost no experience dealing directly with clients, despite my 12 years of experience in architecture.
And I really, honestly, did not know much about design when it came right down to it. So it was intense. But it was also incredibly expansive for me. When I took this job I had no idea how much design I would actually end up doing and the breadth of experience I would get here. Henrybuilt was young, and after meeting the key people and seeing their production operation I was so impressed I just jumped – without really knowing what I was getting into.
Over these past 9 years I have been through hundreds of design cycles on an incredible range of projects. From starting a project, working through the process, to seeing the end result – going through that cycle over and over is how you really learn.
I’ve met – and continue to meet – amazing clients. This company works with great people. I’ve worked on projects in so many different settings, from Mexico City to New Orleans to Toronto to Oxford, Mississippi. And the work I’ve been able to do with my team directly affects the lives of the people we work with – which is a result I get to see and feel and is enormously gratifying. I’ve been able to work with many of the best architects in the country – and beyond – on a great variety of projects.
I’ve also learned about how a team works together to build a company – to design a company – and about one of the most interesting areas of thought in design: system thinking. I’ve been able to become a central part of a team that is growing a company based on the intersection of system design, and made to order manufacturing.
Every project we do is unique. Every client is unique. This company’s design practice is remarkable. It’s rooted in very solid thinking about what creates great results, but our focus with our clients is on how they are going to feel living in the spaces we help create.
Design at this company is not just about "kitchens". It’s about products and spaces and overall interior results that are truly exceptional – with a team and company culture and ambition that is also exceptional. And the company is expanding its focus, which is going to bring new opportunity to those on the design team. This company is going places.
