The post is located within the Grenfell-Baines Institute of Architecture, School of Art, Design and Fashion, at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, and is the result of a unique and exciting new venture to create a student-led architecture office within the Institute.
Design Research North is a newly launched architectural consultancy under the umbrella of the Institute of Architecture at UCLan, which will provide architectural design services, knowledge transfer consultancy and research opportunities.
We are looking for an exceptional Part II student to help run the office; working on live projects with real clients you will draw on the talent and expertise of staff members, undergraduate and postgraduate students within the Institute as well as other disciplines and support facilities from within the university and beyond. To work at Design Research North will be a truly unique and rewarding experience. Design Research North will design and coordinate small to medium research driven architectural schemes from inception to completion. You will be involved in studio tutoring, and may be asked to lead studio as part of your design and research work within the consultancy.
The successful candidate will have excellent design capability in architecture, presentational skills and a high degree of professionalism. Experience of research and design development (data collection to develop briefs is essential as the post holder will be required to develop briefs from inception to completion and to propose and test design solutions. A Postgraduate degree in Architecture (Part II) is required. Advanced knowledge of InDesign (or similar), Photoshop / AutoCAD / Rhino and Grasshopper is desirable.
The successful candidate will be able to work on own initiative and as part of a team, disseminating design ideas to a variety of people when required. The successful candidate will also have excellent time management skills with the ability to work well under pressure. Applicants need to meet all essential criteria on the person specification to be considered for interview. This position is based in Preston with occasional travel to sites based around the UK.

Educational / professional requirements:
- A Bachelors or Masters degree in interior design or architecture from an accredited program.
- A minimum of 7 years of interior design experience.
- A degree in a field other than interior design or architecture plus 10 years of interior design experience.
- Hold a certificate of completion for a management course through a University, Dale Carnegie, or similar.
- Registered Interior Designer (passed NCIDQ and use RID appellation) preferred.
- Leed certified a plus.
- Active Member of ASID / IIDA / AIA a plus.

- Select and manage all FF&E: Architectural materials, furnishings, fixtures, electrical, art, accessories.
- Production of Interior Architectural drawings: plans, elevations, sections, details, millwork, tile design.
- Production of clear and detailed finish schedules.
- Production of presentations to convey your design clearly to clients using a variety of software products: Powerpoint, AutoCAD, Excel.
- Ability to effectively lead and manage up to two Associate interior designers:
- Structured Mentoring and constructive criticism.
- Clear delegation of tasks on each project.
