The Architect of the Capitol will address the historic preservation, restoration, maintenance, repair, construction, sustainability and landscaping needs of the Illinois State Capitol Complex in historic Springfield, Illinois. The Architect is responsible for developing and implementing a long-range master plan for the Illinois State Capitol Complex, a 140 acre site in the downtown area that includes the State Capitol Building, State Museum, State Archives and other prominent structures. On-going projects include planning of a new office building and continued restoration and renovation of the Capitol Building. The Illinois State Capitol Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recent renovations of the House of Representatives and Senate chambers and the Capitol West Wing won multiple awards from The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Landmarks Illinois, AIA Illinois and AIA Chicago. In 2014, the West Wing was certified LEED Gold for New Construction and Major Renovation. This certification is a first for any Capitol in the country.
Requirements: For consideration, candidate must be or become within six months of hire, an Illinois Licensed Architect and must have successfully lead collaborative teams in architecture, project management, historic preservation and sustainability. The ideal candidate will have the following attributes:
- Licensed Architect with minimum 10 years experience delivering quality solutions within a broad range of environments, especially civic, historic, and office.
- Leed Accredited Professional with leed certification experience.
- Successful background in high demand, high profile environments.
- Proven ability to lead consensus processes for successful outcomes.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects across multiple scales simultaneously.
- Proven ability to balance budgets with needs of the Complex in a complex regulatory environment.
- Comfort level with public speaking.
Candidates seeking a long-term appointment are preferred for this non-partisan full-time position based in Springfield, Illinois.
Salary range: $100,000 annually with standard state employee benefit package.

We are currently seeking a Junior Architect; the ideal candidate should have:
- 1-3 years of architectural design and construction experience.
- B. Arch required, M. Arch preferred.
- Excellent design and communications skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Experience with Construction Documents, with a strong emphasis on detailing of both interior projects and exterior cladding construction techniques a plus.
